The story in Entropy Effect progresses by collecting Phenomena Fragments from defeating bosses and completing runs. Between runs, players play as an ACER unit, a cute little Pixar-esque robot. As the robot, players can explore a small hub area of other robots in a future world, upgrade their abilities, tweak the difficulty, and choose their next character. Players can make choices during the Phenomena scenes, and unlock different endings.
However, the bulk of the game is focused on repeating increasingly challenging runs with different characters, unlocking different abilities and combining different Legacy abilities and traits from previous runs. The neon-soaked world is very Cyberpunk, and the Blazblue characters are colorful, flashy, and well-animated.
The gameplay is easy to learn, and the story helps teach the basic upgrade loops, but like all roguelikes, the difficulty scales considerably.
Progress is saved automatically as players enter each new space. Exiting a level mid-space allows you to resume the level at the start of that space.
More advanced difficulties can be unlocked after progressing through the game. To make the game easier, players can adjust four different settings: trap damage, enemy damage, enemy health, and bonus buffs per stage.
Violence As an action roguelike, Entropy Effect is all about rapid, flashy combos in near-constant 2D battles with robots, ninjas, and monsters. There's no blood or gore, and enemies disappear when defeated.
Strong Language At one point, one of the robot NPCs uses "g*dd*mn."
Consumerism Some additional characters are only available as paid DLC.
Supports two-player online co-op after reaching a certain point in the story.
