Story & Themes
Black Myth Wukong is based upon Journey to the West, a classic Chinese novel from the 16th century, and shares a rich history with Chinese culture and Buddhism. In the game's story, an anthropomorphic monkey (known as the Destined One) sets off on a dangerous journey to recover the split relics of Sun Wukong, the original Monkey King.
The Destined One is armed with a magic staff that can shift into different sizes and stances, and wields magic spells to transform into different mythological creatures.
As a soulslike RPG, the world is very dark, serious, and lore-heavy. The Destined One travels to different regions based on cultural landmarks around China, battling monsters and defeating major bosses to unlock new powers and recover the relics to restore Sun Wukong. Gameplay is purposefully challenging and methodical, demanding players fine tune their skills over repeated deaths and attempts to overcome challenges.
Save Points
Soulslike games purposefully limit saves and checkpoints to increase the challenge. The game autosaves after specific checkpoints (such as defeating a major boss), and can only be manually saved by resting at Keeper's Shrines. The game will save if you quit, but you will respawn at the last Keeper's Shrine.
Difficulty
As a soulslike RPG, Black Myth Wukong is challenging, and does not offer different difficulty levels or adjustments. Players are expected to die repeatedly when facing enemies in order to perfect their skills.
Heads Up!
Violence The Destined One battles numerous large, powerful creatures on his journey, firing off spells and attacking with his size-changing staff. The violence is moderate and never excessive, and blood is more realistic rather than gory.
Scary Imagery Some of the monster designs can be quite strange and frightening.
Sex & Nudity Some female characters sport ample cleavage.
Strong Language Some mild language.
