Story & Themes
Aliens vs. Predator is a game with three branching campaigns that come together to form a cohesive storyline. In each campaign, players step into the shoes of either a Marine, Alien, or Predator. The Marine campaign takes place largely on a human colony where the Marine rescues survivors while coming under attack from both Predator and Alien forces.
The Alien campaign is set in a laboratory and follows the Alien known as Specimen 6. Specimen 6 attempts an escape, but it stopped by Mr. Weyland, a character who appears in the Marine campaign and is in charge of the lab. After it is fully grown, Specimen 6 successfully escapes the lab, freeing other Aliens as well as the Matriarch. They establish a hive on the colony and begin to pick off the Marines who arrive. The Matriarch is killed by the Marine from the previous campaign in a fire, and as a result Specimen 6 builds another hive in the ventilation vent of a ship where it starts the process of transforming into the new queen.
In the Predator campaign, a newly elite Predator called "Dark" is sent to the human colony of the other two campaigns. Dark battles both Aliens and Marines before he infiltrates Weyland's lab which has been built over a Predator pyramid. There, he recovers a wrist bracer that he uses to destroy both the pyramid and the surrounding colony in order to purge the temple of the human violation to its sanctity.
Difficulty
The game offers players a quick overview of the basic controls, and overall its mechanics are fairly easy to learn.
Heads Up!
Violence As a Marine, players use guns, explosives, and flamethrowers in fast-paced fighting sequences. The Alien and Predator campaigns are more brutal as players kill humans in both cases. Human enemies are smashed, ripped apart, and one move includes tearing the human's head and spine out.
Scary Imagery The Aliens and Predators are pretty terrifying foes when you're the human Marine. However, the game is most like a traditional shooter and not a survival horror game during the Marine campaign.
Sex & Nudity In one area, players can see a hologram of a pole dancer who is wearing very little in the way of clothes.
Strong Language Aliens vs. Predator has frequent strong language, about 200 instances of f*ck and 175 of sh*t according to the ESRB Rating Summary.
Consumerism The game is part of a massive franchise spawning from two other franchises, though there's no actual consumerism in-game.
Online Community
Aliens vs. Predator includes an online multiplayer mode.
Conversation Starters
- The game's creators have claimed that its extreme violence is necessary for it to be a faithful adaptation of the film. Do you agree with this logic, or does the violence seem gratuitous or overdone?
- Which campaign was your favorite? Why?
- Do you think Aliens vs. Predators has "heroes" or "villains"? Could the humans be considered the good guys or not?
