Story & Themes
As an action roguelike, every game of Everything is Crab begins more or less the same, starting with our slow blue blob. By eating food, either fruits on the ground, or recently slain creatures, our blob unlocks a new evolution. There are over 100 different evolutions, such as Horns, Spit, More Eyes, Tentacles, Cortex, Beak, Agile, and more. Each evolution also has multiple upgrade levels and rarities. Each evolution bestows either new attacks, or passive abilities. Horns grants a charging attack, while Agile improves our movement speed and dodging capabilities. More Eyes cleverly increases our sight radius.
Each evolution also includes a fun or funny factoid with each evolution, offering a nice bit of biologically-inspired education.
Like most roguelikes, the world doesn't sit idly by. It's constantly evolving as well, producing stronger and more powerful enemies, as well as spawning a big boss in regular intervals. By defeating or surviving the final boss, the run is complete.
Everything is Crab features several meta progression unlocks, including harder runs, specific challenge runs, and starting bonuses.
Difficulty
Controls are simple, with WASD or a controller moving your small blob-guy, and the mouse or second stick aiming your attacks. Though players can unlock numerous attacks, only two can ever be equipped at one time (plus a dash, and a special ability), keeping the action simple and fast-paced.
As time ticks by, the world becomes more challenging with stronger enemies. Major boss enemies also spawn at regular intervals, including a final boss in each run. Players must eat food to unlock new evolutions, which in turn feature useful upgrades and attacks.
Upon successful completion of a run, players unlock more challenging runs, with stronger and more aggressive enemies.
Heads Up!
Violence It's a crab-eat-crab world! Though players can technically complete a run without attacking, most of the gameplay involves attacking other creatures and eating their bodies. There's no blood involved. Damage is indicated with flashing red effects.
