Story & Themes
Sonic Generations is a celebration of Sonic's legacy, with a time-traveling story that explores Sonic's 2D sidescrolling past and more modern 3D platforming, including revisiting classic zones and levels such as Green Hill Zone.
Shadow Generations is an all-new sequel to 2005's Shadow the Hedgehog, once again giving players control of the brooding, genetically-engineered villain-turned-anti-hero. Gameplay is very similar to Sonic Generations, with a mixture of 2D and 3D, as players explore a series of fast-paced levels and take on big boss battles.
Shadow also has access to unique time-altering powers called Chaos Control, freezing time and opening up different paths.
Shadow's origins and character arc are much more serious and melodramatic than his blue counterpart, including the tragic loss of a loved one, and his ongoing despair and rage (which led him to becoming a villain in previous incarnations).
Heads Up!
Violence As Sonic or Shadow, players defeat enemies by spin-dashing, kicking, or sometimes lobbing missiles at them. Defeated enemies disappear. The violence is a bit more serious during cutscenes, including the apparent death of a young girl.
