Story & Themes
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a lengthy RPG set in an original fantasy world made up of several kingdoms and humanoid tribes. The story begins as the kingdom of Euchronia is in the midst of a coup, with a murdered king and incapacitated prince. The player controls a nameable protagonist as a member of the Resistance, who is hiding the Prince. Inspired by a fantasy book that depicts a utopian version of our real world (where all people are "one tribe"), the protagonist embarks on a quest to unite the world and defeat a terrible villain.
Themes of racism and prejudice are extremely heavy throughout the story — many of the tribes (including the human-looking protagonist) are treated as second-class citizens, or worse.
Difficulty
Metaphor: ReFantazio features five difficulty levels, with the highest level only unlocked after beating the game (with the true ending). Difficulty settings change enemy damage and defenses.
Heads Up!
Violence Turn-based battles (and real-time strikes) include swords and spells, and monstrous jaws and claws. But the main depiction of violence is through cutscenes, including characters being violently stabbed and slashed, accompanied by cries of pain and blood.
Scary Imagery The "humans" in the Metaphor universe are mutated monstrosities that resemble some of the unsettling and strange demons in the Persona series.
Sex & Nudity Some suggestive lines of dialogue.
Discrimination Discrimination is a major theme throughout the story and world of Metaphor, specifically overt racism the various humanoid tribes have for one another.
