Story & Themes
Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland stars the heroic babies of the Rugrats animated series: Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil, as they embark on a make-believe adventure around the house. While the parents are busy, the babies explore fantastical 2D platforming levels, such as inside the icy fridge, up in the creepy attic, or beneath the mysterious sandbox.
Adventures in Gameland is heavily inspired by retro 8-bit platformers, such as Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers, as they explore somewhat linear levels by picking up blocks, stomping on enemies, and defeating big bosses.
Despite the cutesy appearance and classic cartoon vibes, Adventuers in Gameland is also just as challenging as an old school platformer. It only includes a handful of levels, but each one is lengthy and difficult. Players must also collect all the Retpar coins in each level in order to unlock the final level.
Players can swap between characters at any time, giving them multiple health bars and lives to work, through, as well as play in two player local co-op.
Save Points
The game saves progress between levels, including found Reptar coins. Players cannot save in the middle of a level.
Difficulty
Adventures in Gameland is inspired by 8-bit platformers, and that includes their notorious difficulty. Characters only have two buttons: jump and lift, but enemies are plentiful and respawn quickly, and the babies have limited lives.
Adventures in Gameland features three game modes, which changes how often players can respawn or swap babies, giving them more or fewer lives to complete a level.
Heads Up!
Violence As with Mario and other platformers, the babies can jump on enemies to stun or defeat them. Babies are also hit and defeated when their health bar runs out. In Co-op, a defeated baby sits and cries until the other player moves on, or revives them by sharing their health.
