Story & Themes
Spirits Unleashed is set after the Ghostbusters 2021 reboot film, Afterlife. Veteran Ghostbusters Ray and Winston re-open the New York office for a new generation — including the player character. The new customizable Ghostbuster leads a team of recruits to deal with ghost problems around the city.
Between missions, the story introduces a powerful ghostly threat called Nameless. The story adheres closely to the Ghostbusters' unique blend of comedy-horror and action, as well as the supernatural mythology surrounding the big ghostly threats.
At one point a major character becomes possessed by a ghost, similar to Dana in the original film.
The story progresses at a steady pace between missions, where the player (or players) can play as Ghosbusters, or the single ghost causing all the problems. Ghostbusters must track and capture the ghost and seal the rifts, while the ghost must scare citizens and maximize the haunt level. Each side has access to unique powers and abilities, though the Ghostbusters side must coordinate through teamwork.

Spirits Unleashed automatically saves between missions.
Difficulty
Ghostbusters must rely on their proton packs, PKE meters, and other gadgets to locate, subdue, and ultimately capture the ghosts. It can be easy to get lost in the maps, and first-person shooter controls could be tricky for younger players.
Ghosts play completely differently, using third-person controls and unique skills depending on the ghost. Ghosts can possess citizens and objects, fly through walls, and unleash slime attacks.
Both sides benefit from learning the maps and the various skills and abilities of each side.
AI bots do not have difficulty settings, and are generally very easy to play against (or annoying to play with).
Heads Up!
Violence Ghostbusters fire laser-like particle beams at ghosts to slow them down for capturing, while ghosts can slime or scare humans. It's very similar to the films.
Scary Imagery Although hunting ghosts is the name of the name, the Ghostbusters franchise has never been about pure horror. Still, some of the technicolor ghosts can be a bit unsettling.
Strong Language Very mild language.
