After teasing Immortals of Aveum during The Game Awards, Electronic Arts and Ascendant Studios announced that the first-person magic shooter will release on July 20 on PC (Steam, EA App, EGS), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S ($59.99 on PC, $69.99 on console).

I’m pleased to report that Immortals of Aveum isn’t another bog-standard, free-to-play online shooter with a battle pass.

Nay! This is a single-player, narrative adventure, set in an original fantasy world of magically-gifted soldiers who wield magic like a firearm.

The story stars Jak (Darren Barnet), a man who manifests magic ability later in life. He’s recruited by the Order of Immortals to stand against a tyrannical force hoping to control all magic in the world.

The gameplay looks like a fun mix of Doom and Call of Duty, with lots of spiffy magical attacks. It’s the debut game from Ascendant Studios, which is made up of many industry veterans, and published by the EA Originals label.

“I’m incredibly excited to finally show the world Immortals of Aveum. It’s been a five year journey for us at Ascendant, and I’m so proud of the team and their commitment to making something great,” said Bret Robbins, CEO and Game Director, Ascendant Studios. “We set out to create a cinematic, thrilling shooter set in a new fantasy world, with fast and fluid combat and an epic story. I can’t wait for everyone to play it.”

Pre-orders will receive the Purified Arclight sigil, increasing the power of Jak’s spells. A Deluxe Edition ($69.99 on PC, $79.99 on console) includes several in-game goodies. Immortals of Aveum has not yet been rated by the ESRB.
