When you think of competitive fighting game events, the typical ones come to mind. Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Tekken are some of the games you can expect. But there’s also another entry that typically doesn’t get that much attention on the competitive circuit, and that’s Super Smash Bros. Wii U (referred to as Smash Bros. 4 on the gaming circuit) But the game is growing in popularity, the most recent sign is that more than 2,000 players have registered to compete in the game at Evo, the organizers announced via Twitter.
Evo, which is short for Evolution, is the biggest fighting game event in the world. It’s the place you go to see the top players battle it out for lots of prizes. Evo in general has been growing exponentially in the past few years as eSports are now widely recognized and respected. The increased interest in Super Smash Bros. Wii U is enjoying that rising interest as well.
“It’s always exciting to see how a community embraces a game and attempts to put their mark on the competitive scene,” said Michael Martin, Yahoo Esports FGC Expert. “As more players and eSports organizations get involved in the Smash 4 community, turnout should consistently rival Smash Melee and other popular fighting games at major events.”
Super Smash Bros. Wii U joins Super Smash Bros. Melee don’t enjoy the popularity of games like Street Fighter 5, which has seen more than 4,000 players register to play, but they’re arguably the most family-friendly games to watch. Pokken Tournament, another Nintendo game, is making its debut at the show this year.
Evo takes place at the Las Vegas Convention Center July 15 – 17.
