Adam Badowski, studio head of Projekt Red, announced today that The Witcher 3 has sold over 6 million copies.
“We’ve been hard at work delivering you new content, fixing what needed to be fixed, and secretly plotting how to rock this boat we call the RPG genre even more,” said Badowski in a press release. “Yes, six million copies is a great achievement for a company making RPGs, but this business is not only about that. If our games are a gallery of sound, picture and text—you are the visitors of this gallery. To an artist, there’s no sweeter sight than people enjoying their work. That’s why, in the name of all the devs in the studio, I’d like to say thanks to each and every one of you.”
The Witcher 3 has been reviewed positively. Sixteen rounds of free downloadable content have been released—an unusual move, but one which the studio hopes others will emulate. This is also a pretty big deal for the Polish games industry in general.
The Witcher fantasy universe revolves around mutants called Witchers. They carry out their missions in a midieval “war-torn world.”
Geralt, the protagonist, is one of a few remaining Witchers. He is a monster hunter with extraordinary powers. The game is known for its ambiguous morality system.
Polish fantasy-novel writer Andrezej Sapkowski invented the Witcher universe.
