Tearaway Unfolded officially has a release date! On September 8, PlayStation 4 owners can enjoy their own journey into the paper world of Tearaway.
The game will be a retelling of the Tearaway story, with some added content and different controls. The original came out for the PlayStation Vita in 2013, and used the front- and back-facing cameras and touchpads. It invited the player to feel like they were really sticking their hands into the craft-paper world of Iota and Atoi, the game’s main characters.
Tearaway Unfolded is a PS4 exclusive, so there will be no use of a rear touchpad. But the Dualshock 4 controller’s unique aspects were taken into account, from what we saw of our demo with the game at PAX East. When pointed toward the screen, the light on the back of the controller becomes a guiding light in the game, and the controller’s center touchpad lets you tap the drums in the game.
The light on the controller looks like it’s shining into the game like a flashlight.
At $39.99, Tearaway Unfolded costs as much as the Vita version of the game did. If you pre-order it you will receive the soundtrack, as well as bonus costumes from God of War and Journey for your character to wear. You’ll also get papercraft plans for a Baby Wendigo and Sackboy from the LittleBigPlanet games.
If you played the first Tearaway, you know that during the game you can take pictures of things and receive print-out plans to make paper versions of them. (We have our own papercraft pig in the Pixelkin office.) Crafting the characters out of paper was a great way to keep enjoying the game away from the screen.
