Story & Themes
Garrett, the master thief, is hired to do what he does best. During the job, he and his accomplice Erin come across an obviously magical ritual of some kind. Through an unfortunate twist of fate, they both become involved in the ritual. Garrett loses consciousness and wakes up a year later. In the meantime, things have taken a turn for the worse. A plague known as the Gloom has struck, the baron has put the city under lockdown, and unrest has begun to stir among the people. Garrett continues his work as a master thief. As he goes on new jobs, he will encounter the new anti-government resistance and discover the cause of the mysterious Gloom.

Difficulty
Since Thief is more or less a pure stealth game, even on the hardest setting you won't have to worry about extremely difficult boss fights or anything like that. It just makes the guards ability to see you more realistic. If you're not hidden behind something or in the shadows and a guard is looking your way, of course they will see you. On lower difficulties, this is toned down a bit. You can also worry less about conserving your resources and attacking civilians. You can also make a custom difficulty, but all of the options are geared towards making the game even harder rather than easier.
Heads Up!
Violence Thief is a pretty gritty game and can be very violent. There is a reason it is rated M.
Sex & Nudity There is a brothel level in the game, in which several characters (including women) are depicted topless.
Strong Language There are definitely instances of strong profanity, but the game doesn't go out of it's way to swear at the player constantly.
Substance Use From the ESRB: "Some settings depict opium vats or characters under the influence of the drug." Garrett can consume opium poppies that have been suffused with magic in order to restore his Focus, a resource used to perform certain actions.
Discrimination Garrett's accomplice from the first mission, Erin, is a young woman who turns out to be very important to the story. There are a couple of female minor characters, including one who is hinted at being transgender. All characters in the game are white.
