Sunblink Entertainment have ported cozy life sim Hello Kitty Island Adventure to Nintendo Switch and Steam PC ($39.99). It first released exclusively on Apple Arcade for mac and mobile devices.
Forgive me if I giggle when I see “Hello Kitty Island Adventure.” The name stems from an infamous gaming joke in an old South Park episode circa 2006 (“Make Love, Not Warcraft“), where one of the characters is made fun of for playing a lame-sounding game. And that game was Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
According to the developers, the meme had nothing to do with the creation or name of this game. But I mean, come on.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a life sim clearly inspired by one of the biggest games in the genre — Animal Crossing. The island is inhabited by over 40 Sanrio characters, which are basically every cute famous Japanese character outside Pokémon, including Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, Retsuko, and Keroppi.
Players grow their friendship level with each character through activities and quests. As with Animal Crossing, players customize and decorate houses to attract new visitors and residents. Island Adventure also adds little Zelda-like dungeons and puzzles. The player avatar is also customizable from six different species.
Island Adventure also supports online multiplayer, and hosts year-round events, seasons, and festivals.
Hello Kitty Island Adventure is a real game, and it’s rated E for Everyone. A special physical Deluxe Edition for Switch will release later this spring.
