During Gamescom 2024, Funcom announced Dune: Awakening, an “open world survival MMO” inspired by the bestselling book series, and movies. It’s launching first on PC in early 2025, and later on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Watch the five minute gameplay reveal above.

Unsurprisingly, Dune: Awakening is set on the titular desert planet of Arrakis, where multiple factions want control of a critical substance called Spice. However, in this version, Paul Atreides was never born and never came to Arrakis. Players explore a planet that’s much more wild, untamed, and undefined. And there’s definitely sand worms.

The trailer is quite combat-heavy, with lots of gunplay and warfare. Player classes include Mentant, Planetologist, Swordmaster, and Bene Gesserit, and can join the war between House Harokonnen or Atreides. Players can also build and upgrade bases, and craft and pilot vehicles.

“Revealing gameplay for the first time is always a big moment, especially in a game where the interplay between all these systems can create completely unexpected moments, but the team has done an incredible job and we can’t wait to see how the community reacts,” Joel Bylos, Creative Director, Funcom.

Dunge: Awakening will release first on PC in early 2025. Players can sign up for the closed beta test on the official website.
