Adult Swim Games have released the opening cinematic to upcoming retro-inspired platformer Rain World. The bleak, emotional opening sets the stage for the post-apocalyptic industrial wasteland that your little “slugcat” must journey through.

The title comes from a massive flood that separates you from your family of slugcats. The little ghost-like cat creatures are fairly low on the food chain, and must avoid larger predators in each level. You are able to use simple weapons, in addition to stealth and reflexes. Rain World boasts a living ecosystem, in which you must learn from each encounter as creatures behave differently and interact with each other.

The flood doesn’t end after the opening cinematic. The coming rains serve as a time limit for each level. When the crushing rain begins to fall your slugcat must find shelter, which also serve as save points.

Rain World was successfully Kickstarted in 2014, earning over $60,000 on a $50k goal for new indie developer Videocult. Adult Swim Games came on to help publish Rain World. Adult Swim is most famous for their late night Cartoon Network adult animated programming. In the last few years Adult Swim Games has developed and published over 200 indie titles across mobile, PC, and console.

The full gameplay trailer released earlier this month:

I’m intrigued by the art style, lighting, and procedurally generated animations. The world features over 1600 levels across 12 different regions. Rain World launches on March 28 for PC (Steam) and PlayStation 4 for $19.99.
