Special Kellogg’s Super Mario Cereal Boxes Function as Amiibo

Posted by | News, Switch | No Comments

Nintendo has a long-standing tradition of licensing their characters for cereal boxes. I remember first learning about one of the secret warp whistles for Super Mario Bros, 3 from the back of a cereal box. But I never had anything like this. For a limited time beginning December 11, special Kellogg’s limited edition Super Mario Cereal will include amiibo scans for Super Mario Odyssey.

“This powered-up partnership with Kellogg’s is another exciting way for us to expand the Nintendo brand in unique and creative ways,” said Tom Prata, Nintendo of America’s Senior VP of Strategic Initiatives. “We are always looking for new opportunities to bring smiles to people of all ages, and this is a fun way to kick off the day.”

The cereal is basically Lucky Charms, featuring marshmallow pieces inspired by Super Mario powerups. The outer box’s amiibo symbol can be scanned into Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch as if it were an amiibo figure. The in-game reward is similar if you scan a non-specific amiibo, resulting in coins or hearts.

“We are thrilled to pack so much fun into one box of cereal,” said Brad Schwan, Senior Director of Morning Foods Marketing. “The package adds value and excitement for fans, with marshmallow shapes in the cereal inspired by Super Mario power-ups to tie the theme together.”

Super Mario Cereal will start hitting store shelves as early as next week.

Here Are the New World Video Game Hall of Fame Finalists

The World Video Game Hall of Fame is a new effort by the Strong National Museum of Play to highlight games that have inspired and influenced the medium throughout the history of gaming. These games were chosen from among thousands of public nominations. They had to meet four criteria. The first was icon-status, or widespread recognition. The second was longevity. The third was geographic reach. And the final criterion was overall influence in the field of games, but also other media (and pop culture in general as well).

So who made the cut? There are lots of favorites in the list. Read More

Family Gaming Memories: NES, Chess, and More With Dad

Posted by | News, Opinion | No Comments

“You’re holding it wrong, Dad! Here’s how it’s supposed to be. Like this!”

I grasped the NES controller firmly in the air in front of me, mashing my thumbs up and down on the buttons in a vigorous demonstration of what I—and what I imagine most kids at the time—deemed the “proper” way of playing Nintendo. On the screen, a tiny pixilated plumber bounced up and down in response, doing a funky little dance before head-butting a brick block into smithereens. Read More
