The Cast of Critical Role Joins Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire

Even non-Dungeons & Dragons fans recognize Critical Role, the incredibly popular live-streaming D&D show of professional voice actors. Obsidian Entertainment has announced a partnership with the entire cast of Critical Role for upcoming RPG Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Players will be able to select any of their Vox Machina characters as voices for their own player characters and custom party members.

“I was such a fan of the original Pillars game, and thoroughly enjoying being a part of the vibrant world the team created,” says voice actor Matthew Mercer. “With the wonderful folks of Obsidian now bringing the entire cast of Critical Role to bring even more of the world of Eora to life, it’s sparked this incredible opportunity to bring our Critical Role characters of Vox Machina into their world via custom art and voice sets. A truly surreal milestone for this D&D nerd.”

Matthew Mercer, the Dungeon Master for Critical Role, did the voice work for multiple characters in the first Pillars of Eternity. Both Edér and Aloth will return as party members in the sequel.

“Working closely with the cast of Critical Role to bring Deadfire’s companions and story to life has been an amazing experience,” states Justin E. Bell, audio director, Obsidian. “Their incredible acting talent, ensemble chemistry, and tabletop roleplaying expertise coupled with Obsidian’s expertise in making deep, immersive, CRPG’s is the perfect combination. Together we’ve made something really special that we’re very proud of, and we can’t wait to share it with fans of RPGs when Deadfire releases.”

As an added bonus, special player portraits of the Vox Machina characters will be available as free DLC when Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire launches on May 8. It’s rated M for Mature.

Pillars of Eternity 2 Release Date Confirmed, Pre-Order Details

Versus Evil and Obsidian Entertainment have announced the release date for Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. Pillars of Eternity 2 will launch April 3 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Pre-orders are now available.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is the sequel to 2015’s Pillars of Eternity, the first crowdfunded RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. Their goal was to make a classic tactical computer RPG from the Golden Age of the late 90s and early 2000s, and they mostly succeeded. Pillars 2 was funded via video game investment site Fig, raising $4.4 million, over 400% of their funding goal.

“Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is our first sequel here at Obsidian and we’ve created something incredible,” said Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart. “At Obsidian, we are all about stories, worlds, and characters, and in Deadfire we’ve done it again with a vast open world explorable by the player’s own customizable ship, character customization with enough options to make any RPG player want to make a hundred characters, and an exciting narrative that truly delivers on the reactivity that makes our games special. We’re confident that new and returning players will find Deadfire to be the RPG experience of the year.”

Pillars of Eternity 2 is available in three editions. The Standard Edition contains the game for $49.99. A Deluxe Edition ($59.99) also includes the soundtrack and several digital goodies including an in-game pet, RPG starter guide, and a digital guide book.

The Obsidian Edition comes in digital and physical versions. The digital version is priced at $74.99, and includes everything in the Deluxe version plus the first three DLC expansions. The physical Obsidian Edition costs $79.99 and also include a physical cloth map of the region, a notepad, and a set of postcards.
