Ubisoft have joined forces with Nintendo bring the weird rabbit creatures from rabbids into the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was announced during Ubisoft’s E3 2017 press conference. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot even brought Mario creator Shigeru Miyamato on stage for an awkward presentation. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch on August 29.

In a surprise twist the gameplay is anything but a standard 3D or 2D platformer. It’s actually much more like XCOM with tactical turn-based battles. You control your party of Mario characters and Rabbids (dressed as other Mario Characters). There are full RPG stats and abilities that you set up, and even XCOM-like Overwatch mode. Cover is important in combat and can be destroyed.

The game will feature solo and cooperative turn-based combat.

Between combat encounters you’ll freely explore the newly Rabbid’d world of Mario and collect coins. But the bulk of the gameplay remains on the tactical combat. I am so on board for XCOM For Kids with Mario flavoring.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle arrives August 29 for Nintendo Switch. If you pre-order you get access to 8 unique weapons.
