PAX West 2017 Takes Place this Weekend

Posted by | News | No Comments

The Penny Arcade Expo includes five big gaming conventions every year (not including the developer-only mini-PAX Dev), but PAX West is always the biggest. Formerly called PAX Prime, PAX West is the original expo from the explosive web comic team of Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik back when it was just a single annual convention.

PAX West 2017 is the 13th PAX West event. It’s taking place this weekend at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington. Tickets for PAX West sell out notoriously quickly and this year wasn’t any different.

The keynote speaker is Luke Smith, Bungie’s Game Director for Destiny 2. Holkins will interview him on stage this morning to kick off the four day convention. Click here for a full list of the PAX West 2017 schedule, including board game tournaments and Omegathon tournament.

For the full list of exhibitors at the expo hall, you’ll need to download the PAX Guidebook app. It’s available on iOS and Android. Exhibitors include the usual big name publishers such as Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, and Bethesda, as well as dozens of hopeful indies. Both PAX Rising and PAX 10 include curated groups of indie games in prominent booths on the expo hall.

The main PAX website has also been recently updated and given a nice makeover.

If you weren’t lucky enough to get tickets to PAX West this year, you can still watch many of the panels and shows via Twitch.tv. Three different channels will broadcast shows and panels throughout the four-day weekend, while a fourth will broadcast the PAXArena.

Tickets are still on sale for PAX AUS (Oct), PAX Unplugged (Nov) and PAX South (Jan 2018). PAX West 2017 starts today and ends Monday, September 4.

The Penny Arcade Expos are among the largest gaming conventions of the year. Each PAX show features industry panels, esports tournaments, gaming booths, upcoming games, concerts, and live shows.

Earlier this year Penny Arcade announced their next annualized PAX show, PAX Unplugged. It will focus on tabletop gaming. PAX Unplugged will take place November 17-19 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tickets are now available.

PAX shows are produced by ReedPOP with Penny Arcade. The next scheduled PAX show will be PAX West (formerly PAX Prime), the original as well as the biggest of the PAX events. It takes place September 1-4 in Seattle, Washington. As usual with PAX West tickets sold out very quickly.

Media registration will be available three months before the show. PAX South 2018 takes place next year, January 12-14.

New Tabletop-Focused PAX Show Announced: PAX Unplugged

Directly in the midst of the third annual Penny Arcade Expo in San Antonio, Texas (PAX South), Penny Arcade announced an all-new PAX show. Together with ReedPOP, the PAX producer, they announced PAX Unplugged, a new annual event that focuses entirely on tabletop gaming.

“With the rise of popularity of board games, we wanted to provide a dedicated space where fans can come together,” said Jerry Holkins, one half of the of the Penny Arcade duo. “We will continue to have tabletop games at every PAX. Unplugged will focus on stepping away from the TV, monitor and phone to foster face-face-face multiplayer experiences.”

PAX Unplugged will include all the features and events of previous PAX conventions – an expo hall fall of new and upcoming games, gaming-inspired concerts, tournaments, and panels with professionals from the board gaming industry.

“PAX Unplugged will be a destination for attendees to share their common passions and socialize over board, card and other tabletop games, which have experienced a renaissance in recent years,” states the press release. “Penny Arcade and ReedPOP are happy to embrace the thriving tabletop scene and provide those around it with a welcoming atmosphere to take this resurgence to even greater heights.”

PAX Unplugged will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia from November 17-19, 2017. PAX Unplugged will be the sixth annual PAX show, following PAX Prime, PAX East, PAX AUS, PAX DEV, and PAX South.

Badges for PAX Unplugged will go on sale this Spring. Media and exhibitors can register for a media pass at that time.
