Burly Men At Sea

I Love Me Some Burly Men At Sea

Burly Men at Sea is the second game from husband and wife team Brain&Brain, and it is a freaking delight.

The game has a colorful, storybook style, and you weave the tale of three brothers who find a map and set out for adventure. The player frames the story by clicking and dragging the mouse so that a new scene is in view. The Brothers Beard run along after you, responding fluidly to the movements of the camera.

The game is essentially a side-scrolling point-and-click adventure. You start off discovering a mysterious map that isn’t quite filled in, and then head to town to figure out what exactly that’s all about. Read More

Through the Woods Game

Through the Woods Is Terrifying

Through the Woods is a third-person horror game by Norwegian developer Antagonist, and it made me scream in front of a crowd of people.

Let’s back up. In Through the Woods, you play as a woman whose son has been kidnapped by Old Erik. Old Erik, the woman explains in a voiceover, is basically the bogeyman—a creature in a story used to frighten children. Before Karen’s son was taken, she didn’t think Old Erik existed.

The player comes in as she’s exploring a forested island in the middle of the night, looking for her son. As you explore, she continues to explain what happened in a voiceover to another person, who sounds like either her therapist or a police detective.

It’s a neat way to do exposition, and in scarier parts of the game I kept reminding myself, “Hey, at least she lives, right? This means I’m not gonna die, right? Right?” Read More

Disney Infinity Explained

Disney Infinity is an action-adventure game that relies on players collecting real figurines of popular Disney and Pixar characters. Each time players buy a figurine, they unlock that character and its associated world.

There are two modes of play: Toy Box mode and Play Set Mode. The Play Set mode is a linear campaign, whereas the Toy Box mode is essentially a sandbox where players can build their own worlds. In Toy Box mode, you can play with characters from different worlds (i.e., Disney/Pixar films) but to play co-op in a Play Set you need two characters from that Play Set.
