Story & Themes
Super Mario RPG stars Mario in an original story with a twist. A new foe, a giant sword, appears out of the sky, crashing into Bowser's castle. Mario sets off on a new adventure to rescue Princess Peach, and collect the Seven Stars to defeat Smithy.
Unlike most Mario games, this is a traditional JRPG. Mario traverses colorful areas filled with familiar enemies from the Mario games. When touching an enemy, gameplay changes to turn-based battles. Mario unleashes attacks and special abilities, such as Jump and Fireball. Eventually players recruit other companions, with up to three battling in a party together.
Like the original (and Mario games in general), the game lacks voice acting, through dialogue is brief and often accompanied by funny pantomiming (Mario remains a silent protagonist). Due to the easy battle mechanics, kid-friendly Mario setting, and generally low difficulty, Super Mario RPG makes an excellent starter RPG for younger players.
Save Points
Players primarily save via frequent save points, but the remake also utilizes autosaves.
Difficulty
The Super Mario RPG remake features two difficulty levels: Normal, and Breezy. Breezy unlocks item inventory restrictions, and features faster experience or quicker leveling up.
Heads Up!
Violence Though Mario and friends battle a lot more enemies in turn-based combat, the violence level is on par with a typical Mario game, with players attacking with melee weapons or punches, or launching fireballs or poison gas against cartoony enemies that poof and disappear when defeated.
