Brueh Games and YarnCat Games have announced digital board game adaptation Keep the Heroes Out will release on December 9 on Steam PC and Switch.
Keep the Heroes Out is a twist on the co-op dungeon crawling formula, where players play as monstrous denizens defending their home against the invading heroes.
The board game launched in 2022, and I was among the original Kickstarter backers. It’s a delightful co-op game that plays well with kids and adults. The base game includes over a dozen different scenarios and layouts for the dungeon tiles.
Players pick and choose one of several different monster types, such as skeletons, slimes, or a big ol’ dragon, which includes a unique deck of starter cards. Slimes are great at defending, Imps at laying traps, and Skeletons at turning heroes into Skeletons!
Did I mention it’s also a deckbuilder? While using your cards to move and defeat heroes, you’ll also want to craft new cards to add to your deck, from weapons to potions and familiars. Survive for a number of waves without losing all your treasure, and the players win.
The digital adaptation raised over $200,000 on Kickstarter last year, and features the same colorful, cartoony art style and gameplay as the board game. The digital game also features new animations, a tutorial, and AI bots to play against, as well as online and local multiplayer with up to four players.
“When I launched the tabletop version of Keep the Heroes Out! The response was phenomenal. The board game community thoroughly embraced it, but there was one question that kept popping up: ‘will there be a digital version?’” said Luís Brueh, Founder, Brueh Games. “Well now there is, allowing players to play with their friends remotely or embark on skirmishes against an AI opponent. We appreciate our community for Kickstarting this version and eagerly spreading the word about it. We couldn’t have done it without you all!”
Keep the Heroes Out will release on December 9 on PC and Switch, with Xbox and Meta Quest to follow.
