Chrono Trigger Patch Adds Original Graphics Option

Having one of the most beloved games of all time on Steam should have been cause for celebration. Yet Chrono Trigger’s arrival last February was met with scorn when fans found it was mostly a port of the mobile version, with made-for-touchscreen menus and updated graphics.

To Square Enix’s credit they have listened to fan feedback with the first patch, available now. The patch adds an option to switch between an Original Graphics mode which, according to the announcement, “is more in-line with the original style of Chrono Trigger.”

The patch also updates the fonts and dialogue windows and reworks the opening animations, all to make the game feel more like the original 1995 SNES version. Or at the very least, the lauded 2008 Nintendo DS port.

Future updates will add additional changes and updates to the UI and menus, including optimizing for gamepad, keyboard, and mouse controls.

Square Enix is also extending the duration that fans can purchase the Limited Edition of Chrono Trigger. The Limited Edition includes some PC wallpapers, a five-song medley track, and composer Yasunori Mitsuda’s digital liner notes. The Limited Edition is now available until April 30.

Chrono Trigger originally launched in 1995 from a dream team of Japanese RPG game designers, and has remained one of the most cherished and influential RPGs in gaming. It’s currently available on mobile and PC, and was conspicuously absent from the Super Nintendo Classic Edition last fall. It’s rated T for Teen.

The Runaways Join the Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 Roster

The latest character DLC for Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 adds the Runaways. The character and level pack adds the characters and a new level from Brian K. Vaughn’s beloved young adult Marvel series. It’s available now for $2.99, or as part of the Season Pass ($14.99).

The Runaways Character and Level Pack adds seven new playable characters from the comic series: Nico, Chase, Alex, Karolina, Molly, Gertrude and her pet Velociraptor Old Lace. The Runaways are a group of burgeoning super-powered teens who find out their parents have formed an evil cult called The Pride. It’s a fantastic series that was recently adapted into a TV series on Hulu.

The new level represents the climactic finale and showdown of the original series, at the undersea Marine Vivarium.

The Season Pass includes all past and future DLC. Thus far it includes three character and level packs: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Black Panther, and Cloak & Dagger, as well as three smaller character packs: Champions, Out of Time, Agents of Atlas.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 launched last fall as the long awaited sequel to 2013 Lego Marvel Super Heroes. It features an all-new story that pits a huge roster of Marvel heroes against the time-traveling shenanigans of Kang the Conqueror. It’s a great LEGO game, though sadly, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s completely devoid of X-Men.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 is rated E for Everyone. It’s available for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch.

Spyro Flies Again in Newly Remastered Spyro Reignited Trilogy

If you’ve been wondering what the Skylanders developers, Toys for Bob, have been up to, here you go. Activision Blizzard and Toys for Bob have announced the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, containing HD remasters for the original trilogy of Spyro games. It’s coming September 21 to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

“We’re deeply passionate about staying true to the legacy of the original three Spyro games with the Spyro Reignited Trilogy,” said Paul Yan, Chief Creative Officer, at Toys For Bob. “We’ve poured a lot of love into making the personalities and worlds feel just like fans remember them, while also keeping the game collection surprisingly fresh with lush, high definition detail. We’re bringing back the Spyro we all fell in love with 20 years ago.”

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy includes over 100 levels with improved environments, controls, graphics, and cinematics. Each level has been faithfully rebuilt from the ground up, but with modern technology and improvements.

As an added bonus, the original voice actor for Spyro, Tom Kenny, will reprise his role in the Reignited Trilogy.

The original trilogy of Spyro games released in 1998-2000 on the PlayStation, making this year the 20th anniversary of the franchise. They were well-received 3D platformers during the Golden Age of the genre. The series continued into the next console generation as well as on handhelds.

Spyro then acted as the ambassador (and blueprint) for the Skylanders series, beginning with Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure in 2011. The character maintains a starring role in the Netflix animated Skylanders Academy series as well.

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy launches September 21 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It has not yet been rated, but all previous Spyro and Skylanders games were rated E for Everyone.
