In NBA 2K16, the story is found in MyCareer mode. This mode allows players to step into the shoes of a high school athlete with big dreams, and the experience is much more fully fleshed than in previous games. The mode moves players through a pre-established narrative, presented through cutscenes, as their character transitions from high school to college and, finally, is drafted into the NBA. While the overarching storyline is set in stone, players will be able to customize many aspects of the journey, such as choosing which teams to try out for and what endorsements to accept. MyCareer mode basically lets players role-play a professional athlete, providing the framework while allowing players the freedom to decide the specifics.

NBA 2K16 has plenty of tutorials, yet the gameplay is highly nuanced and may be too challenging to grasp for those not already familiar with the rules and strategies of basketball.

Several of the game's modes let players pit their teams against one another's.
