NieR: Automata officially launches on PlayStation 4 today. PC owners will have to wait slightly longer. It’s coming to Steam on March 17.

The Day One Edition includes some bonus skins for your flying robot buddy, Pod:

  • Play System Pod Skin
  • Retro Grey Pod Skin
  • Retro Red Pod Skin
  • Cardboard Pod Skin
  • Grimoire Weiss Pod
  • Machine Mask Accessory

NieR: Automata is the sequel to 2010’s NieR. Both are third-person action-RPGs, but NieR: Automata is set thousands of years after NieR, in a post-apocalyptic Earth. Humanity has been nearly driven to extinction by an invading alien army. Naturally humans build robots of their own, androids, and send them to Earth to battle.

Gameplay is mostly third-person action. There’s also some puzzle-solving, platforming, and side-scrolling sections. And of course, flying mech suits. Combat is very frenetic, a trademark of Japanese developer PlatinumGames. PlatinumGames is most known for the Bayonetta series. The NieR series is published by Square Enix.

The original NieR received mixed to bad reviews but garnered a cult following with a sizable fan base. The sequel has received near universal praise. It’s currently enjoying a 90 Metacritic rating thanks to expanded RPG elements, open world exploration, and a deep story.

NieR: Automata has been rated M for Mature by the ESRB. It includes Blood, Partial Nudity, Strong Language, and Violence.

A free demo of NieR: Automata can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store. You can also download two free PS4 themes that depict the main characters in their mech suits.
