“Exclusive on Xbox One and Windows PC” rang out throughout the Xbox E3 presentation. No where was it more impressive than Gears of War 4.

“Gears 4 will be one of the first titles in the new Xbox program, Xbox Play Anywhere,” said Rod Fergusson, founder of Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition. “When you buy the game digitally, you get to own and play it on Xbox One and Windows 10 PC.” The cross-buy news was met with raucous applause from the E3 audience. Fergusson also mentioned that saves and achievements would work seamlessly across both platforms.

Even more impressive, every cooperative multiplayer mode will support cross-play between platforms. This will go a long way to ensuring a healthy online community through both platforms, as well as allowing more friends to play together. Gears of War 4 will feature a fully cooperative campaign, multiplayer, and the ever-popular horde mode.

The presentation then launched into a lengthy gameplay demo of the campaign. Prolific voice actress Laura Bailey was in the driver’s seat as her character Kait. She was joined by friends J.D. Fenix (son of Marcus and Anya) and friend Del as they combated a new threat called the Swarm. The gameplay showed off the classic third-person cover-based shooting along with some truly impressive environmental effects and weather, from dusty wind storms to violent lightning strikes.

Gears of War 4 will arrive October 11 for Xbox One and Windows PC.
